This week I wanted to write about service, but I sat trying to think about what service I have actually done lately. This got me thinking that I feel like there is this idea that “volunteering” must mean going somewhere and doing something that takes a lot of time. In reality though, that is not what volunteering is. According to a quick google search, volunteering literally means “freely offering to do something.” So, if you think about it, it is actually way easier to volunteer than you (or even I) might have thought. I thought of a couple of things that could fall into my definition of volunteering before this google search: · Fostering a dog for the weekend with my boyfriend · Creating slip proof socks for hospital patients · Making bookmarks for students in schools (Just a reminder that I’m in a service club so doing things like creating slip proof socks is just part of our club meetings!) But then I thought of some things that fall into the definition that I just learned: · I held the door for a random person · Did something small for my roommate · Took care of our cat while my roommate was busy There is SO much that can be considered as volunteering and I think it (at least for me) was often overlooked because of this idea that it needed to be “big.” My purpose of writing this blog post is to remind you to give yourself credit. I'm sure at least once in your life you have thought about how you could be doing more for other people or wished you could volunteer somewhere, but the reality is you most likely already were doing these things. It’s hard to walk through a door and not hold it for the person behind you, but I bet you don’t give yourself credit for doing that. Life can get so busy and If we take the time to acknowledge that we are trying our best and we are able to volunteer in our everyday, daily activities, maybe it can bring an extra piece of happiness to your day and someone else’s. A tiny piece of service will probably go a lot further than you would think. So next time you’re having a bad day, hold the door open or ask the Starbucks barista how their day is going. It will probably give you both a piece of happiness to help you get through the day. Share below how you volunteer in your every day daily tasks!
